Driveways in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley
The hills region runs from Lilydale up into the Dandenong Ranges and across the Yarra Valley townships. Driveway work here is unlike anywhere else in Melbourne: blocks are steeper, driveways are longer, and a good number of roads have no kerb and channel, so the crossover often needs a culvert pipe under it to keep the roadside table drain flowing.
On steep sites the practical questions come first. The grade has to be set so a standard car does not scrape at the change of level, grip matters on wet mornings, which is why broom finished and exposed aggregate surfaces are the usual choice over smooth trowelled concrete, and drainage has to be planned so stormwater runs where it should rather than down the driveway and into the garage.
Yarra Ranges council specifies crossover requirements including culvert sizing as part of its vehicle crossing permit process, and tree protection rules apply widely through the hills. The council guide has the detail, and the cost guide covers how slope and access affect price.
