Driveways in the Inner East
The inner east runs from the Victorian and Edwardian streets of Hawthorn and Camberwell through to the rebuilt blocks of Box Hill and the sloping streets of Doncaster. Much of the housing is original period stock on narrow frontages, and many driveways here are single width side runs poured decades ago and now cracked or heaving.
Two things shape driveway work in this region. The first is clay that moves with the seasons, which is why preparation under the slab matters more than the concrete on top. The second is heritage: large parts of Boroondara sit under heritage overlays, where widening or adding a crossover can need planning approval on top of the standard vehicle crossing permit. The council by council crossover guide covers what each council asks for.
Exposed aggregate is the most requested street-facing finish here, suiting both period homes and contemporary rebuilds, with plain and coloured concrete common on side driveways and rear slabs.
